JEMIMAH PUDDLEDUCK
Nateva: What do you like best about performing at festivals?
Mark Karan: The sense of community, and being able to play music outside in the beautiful weather and wilderness.
Nateva: How would you describe your favorite festival experience?
Mark Karan: Strangely, it would have nothing to do with me playing. My favorites have been sitting sidestage and watching the Police and Wilco play at Bonnaroo.
Nateva: What are you most looking forward to at Nateva?
Mark Karan: Playing music! I always look forward to that. (any lobster on the menu?)

MOE.
moe. is the preeminent progressive rock band on the music scene today. In a remarkable career that’s touched upon three decades and produced 17 albums, the quintet of Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey on guitars and vocals, Rob Derhak on bass and vocals, Jim Loughlin on percussion and vibes, and Vinnie Amico on Drums, continues to push the standard for performance art.
THE DEREK TRUCKS & SUSAN TEDESCHI BAND
Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have put together a new band that will perform an original mixture of rock, soul, blues and roots … Trucks has led his own Grammy Award winning The Derek Trucks Band for over 15 years, been the slide guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band for more than ten and toured the world with Eric Clapton. Tedeschi has risen to fame with multiple Grammy Award nominations, and her powerful singing voice and fearless stage presence have made her one of the most stirring soul and blues musicians of our time.
STS9
Since forming in Atlanta over a decade ago, instrumental electronic rock band STS9 continues to be at the forefront of the electronic music scene. Ranked #25 on Pollstar’s list of top grossing touring acts, STS9 truly does it all; from selling out almost every date on their Winter 2010 6-week tour (which ended with the band opening for Jay-Z) to owning their own record label, 1320 Records, to using their voice as a platform for change by raising admirable amounts of money towards their activism efforts; pushing boundaries is all in a day’s work for STS9. Currently, the 5-piece band is on the road in support of their latest album, Ad Explorata (the tenth in their full discography), which once again finds them exploring new musical terrain. As the band explains, “Ad Explorata was inspired by the idea that there is always more to be discovered, manifested by the belief that you can always push towards the unknown and unexplored, and created by the will and desire for constant artistic evolution, expression and change.” STS9 will play at exactly 8:28 p.m. on Saturday night… for Sunset in Maine… don’t miss this amazing and unique performance!
SHE & HIM make music for an eternal springtime, when the temperature is warm enough to go riding with the top (or at least the windows) rolled down and the radio turned up. What began as a fascinating, no-strings attached collaboration on 2008’s Volume One has evolved into a bona fide, touring band, and She & Him are here to stay. Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward are as comfortable and complementary a musical pair as Les Paul and Mary Ford; hearing them again on Volume Two feels like getting together with two old friends. This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. But, as with Volume One, the prevailing mood is bittersweet, dreamy, and romantic.
Boston’s PASSION PIT is the brainchild of Michael Angelakos with live band consisting of Ian Hultquist (synths), Ayad al Adhamy (synths, samplers), Jeff Apruzzese (bass, synths), and Nate Donmoyer (drums). Michael is a songwriter’s songwriter drawing from a variety of influences, from the classic pop of Randy Newman to the synth work of Giorgio Moroder. Playing as a five piece live band, Passion Pit has already blown away audiences opening up for Death Cab For Cutie, Girl Talk, These New Puritans and more.
GRIZZLY BEAR began as a home recording project for Boston-bred experimentalist Edward Droste, who laid the groundwork for the band’s otherworldly debut album on a small hand-held tape recorder while holed up for 15 months in his Brooklyn, apartment. His homespun D.I.Y. effort took on new life with the help of multi-instrumentalist Christopher Bear, who added additional instrumentation and vocals to Droste’s stripped-down sonic blueprints. The resulting album, “Horn of Plenty” — a pet project originally meant only for Droste’s friends — eventually circulated through New York’s underground music scene, with its unique blend of acoustic instruments, layered vocals, and found sounds earning comparisons to alt-rock heavy-hitters such as Sigur Rós, Sufjan Stevens, and Animal Collective. Originally released to little fanfare in 2004, the album gained momentum thanks to copious touring. It was reissued in 2005 as a two-CD set featuring remixes by Dntel (of the Postal Service), Final Fantasy, Solex, and the Soft Pink Truth (a.k.a. Drew Daniel of Matmos). An album of Droste’s early demo recordings, “Sorry for the Delay,” was released in 2006 as the band finished up recording “Yellow House,” their second proper full-length album released that fall.
GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock ‘n roll souls. Taking the working man’s approach, Ghostland Observatory spend countless hours in their south Austin studio. They have released two albums in less than a year, and have moved audiences from coast to coast with their live performances and unique style. Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens’ vocal style and stage performances are unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily influenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY.
Flaunting a mix of Southern pride, erudite lyrics, and a muscled three-guitar attack, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS became one of the most well-respected alternative country-rock acts of the 2000s. Led by frontman Patterson Hood and comprising a rotating cast of Georgia and Alabama natives, the band celebrated the South while refusing to paint over its spotty past. History, folklore, politics, and character studies all shared equal space in the Truckers catalog, which offered up its first blast of gutsy, twangy rock with 1998’s Gangstabilly. However, it was the band’s ambitious double-disc concept album, The Southern Rock Opera, that became their unlikely magnum opus. A two-act affair, the album explored Patterson Hood’s fascination with 1970s Southern rock (specifically Lynyrd Skynyrd) while tackling the cultural contradictions of the region. Although the band remained on tour well into 2009, the Truckers also found time to release their second concert album, Live from Austin TX, as well as a collection of unreleased material entitled The Fine Print: A Collection of Oddities and Rarities. GEORGE CLINTON & PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC
George Clinton is the legendary and internationally renowned grandfather of funk and the founder of the Parliament-Funkadelic MOB, taking the sonic innovations of James Brown and Sly Stone to both outer space and Neptune while selling millions of records and concert tickets in the process. He can dip back to an era of sweet street corner soul that was his initial inspiration, take some folks back into time while blowing their minds with new spins on the standards.
UMPHREY’S MCGEE
Midwestern monsters of improvised rock, Umphrey’s McGee is known for their innovative approach to distributing music and building community. Since forming in the late ’90s, the musically muscular and relentlessly inventive Umphrey’s McGee has cultivated an impressive presence both live and in the studio. Lauded by critics and adored by fans, the band continues to draw in new listeners with their singular style: virtuoso playing and acrobatic tempo changes and rhythmic shifts complemented by dazzling song craft and composition, memorable hooks, anthemic guitar lines and rock solid rhythms. Now in their second decade, Umphre’s McGee continues to wow fans globally. Their sound evolves with every passing show and the band shows no signs of letting up.
JACKIE GREENE– singer and songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player, acoustic solo artist and electrifying band leader – hesitates to spell things out too much. Many people have already made up their minds about Jackie Greene, the Americana phenom from Sacramento who made his first album only six years ago and has steadily built up a passionate following among both rank-and-file fans and some of the biggest names in music. Tours with a who’s-who of American roots music – Buddy Guy, Elvis Costello, Susan Tedeschi, Willie Nelson, B.B. King and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott among them – and performances everywhere from the Newport Folk Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival to Bonnaroo, have meant that Greene was recognized quickly by those who know talent, and who saw something rare and promising in him.
ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA
Zappa Plays Zappa is Dweezil Zappas ongoing homage and performance of his father’s music. Zappa Plays Zappa is a seven-person-strong ensemble dedicated to keeping Frank Zappas music (aesthetically eight to 10 years ahead of whatever copyright date was printed on the records in the first place) very much alive. Zappa Plays Zappa is the synergistic result of what happens when a vibrant repertoire of music is learned by a stellar band and worshipped by an audience weary of Pro Tools.
JAKOB DYLAN, the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter and frontman of The Wallflowers, released his second solo album, “Women and Country,” on Apr. 6. The album was produced by T Bone Burnett, who’s helmed acclaimed albums by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett & k.d. lang, Brandi Carlile and The Wallflowers, as well as the mega-successful soundtrack albums for “Crazy Heart,” “Walk The Line” and ” O Brother Where Art Thou?”.
KELLER WILLIAMS
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Keller Williams is a self-taught, one-man band. He has built a career on his uncanny ability to captivate a packed house all by himself. In his one-man show, he pads barefoot from guitar to bass to percussion stations, using looping effects and enough instruments to stock a strip-mall music store to layer sound atop sound until the stage swirls with a full-blown composition.
LOTUS
Never a group to be pigeonholed, Lotus brings many musical weapons to the stage. Equal parts dance and rock, Lotus has been crafting a unique brand of instrumental rock for the past decade. The big light show and pounding beats may be club inspired, but the band’s ability to connect with the audience through emotive composition and dynamic improvisation pushes performances past the elusive barrier dividing concert and experience. Lotus Artist Q&A
CRASH KINGS are comprised of brothers Antonio (Tony) Beliveau on keyboards and Michael (Mike) Beliveau on bass. Of their vision, Tony is quick to point out, “We wanted to create a band that once and for all could be ‘The Big Rock Sound’ without guitar.” One might wonder…rock without guitar, how is that possible? Well, the Crash Kings have gotten a bit innovative in their quest to create rock with just keys, bass, and drums. With tube overdrive and multiple amps, Mike’s bass brings heaviness to the band’s sound. On top of that Tony plays a clavinet (a keyboard with guitar strings), which has been customized with a large whammy bar allowing him to bend notes like a guitar producing an entirely new sound. Having these two very unique elements makes the Crash Kings’ music feel raw and full at the same time.
MAX CREEK
Max Creek are true pioneers of the electric rock jam, with nearly four decades of experience launching musical adventures with a rich repertoire of originals and uniquely interpreted gems. Each set is a journey for audience and band alike, chasing muses without a net and bringing it all back home to the roots again. Bassist John Rider, keyboardist Mark Mercier, and guitarist Scott Murawski form the singing and songwriting core of the band, meshing melodically over the double-drum foundation laid by Greg Vasso and Scott Allshouse with a knowing ease and agility that inspires and endures.
MOONALICE
Jésus H. Moonalice (Barry Sless) – bass, guitar, pedal steel, vocals
Sir Sinjin Moonalice (Pete Sears) – bass, keyboards, accordion, guitar, vocals
Blue Moonalice (Ann McNamee) – bass, keyboards, percussion, vocals
White Cloud Moonalice (John Molo) – bass and drums
Chubby Wombat Moonalice (Roger McNamee) – bass, guitar, vocals
Moonalice Artist Q&A
MARK KARAN tours with an array of amazing musicians in Jemimah Puddleduck, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring.
JOHN BROWN’S BODY
John Brown’s Body’s “Future Roots” uses reggae as a foundation, but incorporates dub, drum and bass, dancehall, hip hop and other musical experiments and exploration to create a sound both timeless and forward. However it’s defined, it’s got people buzzing about this progressive band from Boston and Ithaca, NY. John Brown’s Body was formed out of the ashes of Tribulations, an up-tempo reggae band that melded Island sounds to a harder edge. The group has headlined nationally, all the while building a following in both the reggae world and the growing jam band scene. Their latest album, Amplify, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Reggae Chart.
THE FELICE BROTHERS
The Felice Brothers and their long time friends and band mates Greg Farley and Christmas Clapton, come to us from the Catskill Mountains, where a homegrown sound has been working its way through the bloodlines for generations. Their rambling journey so far has brought them from busking in New York City subway stations, to tours across the world that have included enthusiastically received performances at major music festivals.
RYAN MONTBLEAU BAND
Emerging onto the national music scene from his home base of Boston, Ryan Montbleau has been described as something of a Martin Sexton by way of Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder. Yet Ryan Montbleau Band’s music is difficult to pigeon-hole or neatly categorize. It is original yet familiar—a fresh sound full of firmly-rooted ingredients, including Americana, folk, blues, ragtime and ’70’s R&B and soul. Whereas the band’s intriguing instrumentation and arrangements (not to mention top notch chops) help to create this unique sound, all is firmly anchored by Montbleau’s water-tight lyrics and unmistakable voice.
GREENSKY BLUEGRASS
Greensky Bluegrass with its award winning and genre-bending music is one of the most exciting bands in today’s music scene. Like a breath of fresh air, this five piece band plays traditional bluegrass instruments and uses them to create original songs and soundscapes that are unique and new, yet somehow feel comfortable and familiar. Though they have been likened to ‘70s era Americana acts like The Band, Greensky would prefer not to be compared to any other bands. Greensky Bluegrass is Anders Beck (dobro), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo), Dave Bruzza (guitar), Mike Devol (upright bass) and Paul Hoffman (mandolin).
RUSTIC OVERTONES formed in Portland, ME; hometown to each of them. Members of this seven-piece outfit are guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Gutter, drummer Tony McNaboe, trombonist Dave Noyes, baritone saxophonist Jason Ward, bassist Jon Roods, alto saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and Spencer Albee on keyboards and piano. Roods and Gutter began performing together first, in a family basement.
LETTUCE, the seven-person all-star collective originally formed in 1992, returns to the funk jazz forefront with its third album, RAGE!, a hyper-charged outing of tunes that are equal parts artsy and party. All the members bring to the group different funk-styled influences. “This album is a tribute to all the funk greats. We all grew up through the evolution of funk into hip-hop, hearing the original versions as well as the sampled versions. Our versions incorporate both.” – guitarist Eric Krasno; “A lot of us work on mainstream music, but this record is as non-commercial as it gets. We did it for the love, and you can hear that come through the music.” – guitarist Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff; “We called the record Rage! because that’s what we do. We’re ragers and that’s how we got started … by raging.” – bassist Erick “E.D.” Coomes
GYPSY TAILWIND A soulful Americana act even more mobile than their name might imply, Gypsy Tailwind, led by Daniel Connor (vocals, guitar) and Amanda Gervasi (vocals, guitar, ukelele), has taken the Northeast by storm. The band is currently gearing up to release their third record “Decades and Days” in June ‘10, followed by a festival and club run that will last into the fall. In a matter of only three years, Gypsy Tailwind has gained a strong local and regional following, and are talented and wise enough artists to reach out to their niche fans in markets across the country. As they prepare to release their next album, Decades and Days, you can expect more meaningful lyrics and powerful melodies and watch them keep on moving up… Gypsy Tailwind Artist Q&A
EOTO – Consisting of Michael Travis and Jason Hann the duo mixes the organic sounds of live drums, keyboards, vocals, bass, percussion, and guitar through a variety of programs and gadgets to create a style of music that is more likely found in a dance club, then a live music theater. What sets EOTO apart from other artists in this emerging genre is how the music is created. While some artists may spend hours pre-mixing samples and elements of music for their live show, EOTO uses nothing pre-recorded, giving them the ability to approach each song with on-the-spot spontaneity and 100% live improvisation.
Over the past year, Colorado’s BIG GIGANTIC have become more than your average electronic act. With over 50,000 downloads within the first four weeks of their latest release on 1320 Records and selling out 75% of the venues on their first headlining tour, Big Gigantic is truly creating a name for themselves. One thing Dominic Lalli (Motet saxophonist/producer) is not afraid of is trying new things. Big Gigantic is Lalli’s latest project that showcases an array of gripping compositions combining elements of a DJ and a live band setup. Lalli and drummer, Jeremy Salken, mix thoughtfully melodic ideas with pulsating dance tunes that are sure to energize the dance floor.
GIANT PANDA GUERILLA DUB SQUAD is relentless reggae sound. Roots reggae and experimental dub. North American International Body Music. GPGDS has played 500 shows in the past three years, touring relentlessly and developing a widespread grassroots following. The Rochester NY-based quartet is known for their tight musicianship and dynamic live show experience. Members: James Searl, Chris O’Brian, Dylan Savage, Aaron Lipp.
Massachusetts-based quartet THE BREW cook up a musical melting pot on their brand-new, self-released album, Back to the Woods, that combines their roots in classic rock, adding ingredients of prog, jazz, reggae, world beat, indie, funk and orchestral pop, sometimes in the course of a single song. The band’s commitment to their music is total, and in a flavor-of-the-month world of commercialism, they are a walk-the-talk example of succeeding on your own terms. And while the band is grateful for their success with the jam band crowd, Chris says the big advance in Back to the Woods is in being able to write and record real songs, with beginnings, middles and ends, like the classic-rock idols his dad turned him on to, bands like Steely Dan and artists such as Paul Simon.
THE CONSTELLATIONS could have called their debut album After Hours. Sure, Martin Scorsese already used that name for his 1985 black comedy, but the two works share much in common. Both are wide screen spectacles rife with seedy scenes and eccentric personalities, propelled by a manic energy that hustles the audience deeper into the unexpected. But Southern Gothic was a better choice. Because The Constellations stomping ground is Atlanta, GA, and in the wee small hours of the morning, A-Town can get awfully bizarre.
Blending American and West African influences into a sound all its own, TOUBAB KREWE has set “a new standard for fusions of rock ‘n’ roll and West African music” (Afropop Worldwide). Since forming in 2005, the magnetic instrumental quintet has won a diverse and devoted following at performances everywhere from Bonnaroo to the legendary Festival of the Desert in Essakane, Mali. Produced by Grammy winning producer Steven Heller (who also produced the band’s debut), the new album captures their outstanding 2007-2008 New Year’s run. All of the songs are previously unreleased and continue to mix American rock with the West African musical traditions the band fell in love with on their travels. Along the way, they explore the worlds of surf and zydeco, fusing it all together into what the Village Voice describes as “a futuristic, psychedelic, neo-griot frenzy” and Honest Tune hails as “one of the most innovative voices in music today.”
THE HEAVY PETS are an American rock and roll band whose contagious vibe blends rhythm and blues, jazz-funk and reggae fusion with homegrown rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing, force of nature” by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine, The Heavy Pets are known for powerhouse performances spiked with hot electric licks and multi-climactic instrumental solos, as well as for their masterful acoustic acumen. With five skilled musicians, who are also composers and lyricists, The Heavy Pets have amassed a deep catalog of original music that critics call, “full blown musical salvation”; “elegant songwriting with blazing chops, thought-provoking lyrics and a heavy, danceable backbeat”; “funk-reggae rock hybrid that’s laid back and sexy”; and “funky, loose-limbed rock and soul.” Their undeniable magnetism compels audiences to move and groove along a musical journey full of unexpected harmonic treats punctuated with fantastical lyrics revealing inspired philosophical leanings.
From Boston, MA, and roots in Northeast Pennsylvania, THE INDOBOX is starting parties everywhere they go, bringing something they call Dance-Rock… Guitarists Mike Carter and Joe Zarick fuse psychedelic rock guitars with dirty dance beats from Steve Learson’s synths and Quinn Ferree’s drums, all with catchy hooks to sing along to. Every Indobox show inevitably turns into a wild dance party so get ready!
ROOTS OF CREATION, the Southern New Hampshire based Reggae/Rock/Dubtronica quartet, is being spotted on many people’s radars as they continue to draw overwhelming numbers of fans and followers to their live performances and parties in New England and coast to coast. Roots of Creation performs at many national events, theatres, and colleges throughout the year. During the summer RoC brings their relentless sound to a long list of festivals including: Camp Bisco, Rothbury, We the People, Trinumeral, Strangecreek, Rock the Resort and many more. They are becoming a main stage and late night staple. People desire and keep coming back for more unique and memorable RoC concert experiences to enjoy the bountiful blend of reggae music and positive energy.
BOW THAYER & PERFECT TRAINWRECK are a prolific band of country-side distinction with several CDs and not one bad review. Bow has been cited as “one of the bright new lights on the Americana music scene.” Bow Thayer and Perfect Trainwreck are reminiscent of Bob Dylan, John Prine, The Grateful Dead, Arlo Guthrie and classic country of the forties and fifties all waft in and out of his finger-picking and vocals. But Thayer’s “newgrass” draws all these influences to the present and forward, putting him neck and neck with the likes of early Wilco, Old 97, and Yonder Mountain String Band. Perfect Trainwreck is the perfect accompaniment to Bow. They have played together for years and have not only forged an enviable chemistry, but have also managed to add richness to Bow’s song-craft.
Nate Wilson’s first true effort as a bandleader represents a new point of arrival and re-invention for the New Hampshire based singer-songwriter/keyboardist. Originally formed for a weekly residency at the legendary Stone Church near the University of New Hampshire, the NATE WILSON GROUP solidified its sound in 2007 with the release of their first studio EP, featuring original tracks “For the Sun,” “Justify,” and “Unbound.” Gathering much of their inspiration from the riff-heavy psychedelic hard-rock of the 60’s and 70’s, the Group has drawn comparisons to 1st generation luminaries Led Zeppelin and Cream, as well as neo-classic and stoner rock contemporaries Wolfmother, The Black Keys, Dead Meadow, and The Raconteurs. In the brief time since their inception, the group has divided its time equally between the stage and the studio. They continue to write and tour, expanding their fanbase throughout the Northeast while promoting their debut album, Unbound.
Positive lyrics and intricate wordplay, memorable hooks, soulful roots, old-school vocal harmonies, and intense passion are but a few of the elements which combine to form the powerful and unique sound of THE ALCHEMYSTICS. Formed as a trio in 2003, the Alchemystics achieved their current lineup in 2006. Whether forging fresh tracks in the studio, as on their 2008 eponymous EP, or in the crucible of live performance, as captured on their full-length LIVE 2008 recording, the Alchemsytics Sound flows and grows from a blending of individuals, styles, experiences and customs into a “new roots” style of high-energy, captivating music that gets crowds jumping. The Alchemystics and its members shared stages with such respected music luminaries as Stephen Marley, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Clipse, Damian Marley, Sister Carol, Dennis Brown, Inner Circle, Busta Rhymes, Yellow Man, Burning Spear, Gil Scott Heron, Culture, ShineHead, Angelique Kidjo, Mighty Sparrow, The Brazilian Girls, Israel Vibration, English Beat, King Sunny Ade, Bonnie Raitt, and Taj Mahal.
Bud & Budd ~ THE KIND BUDS take their audiences on a roller coaster of tension and release, trading fiery-sweet guitar licks with raucous, wide-open acoustic jams and stunning guitar interplay. Tight vocal harmonies compliment and complete their polished sound. Since the duo’s inception 5 years ago, The Kind Buds have played over 500 shows. In their short career, they have had featured performances at notable music festivals including The Gathering of the Vibes, Camp Creek, StrangeCreek, Solarfest, Bear’s Picnic, Summer of Love 40th Anniversary Tour, among other great music festivals up & down the East Coast. Uncle Dave of the syndicated radio show “Dead Air” 88.7 WNCW out of Spindale, North Carolina says of The Buds, “The Kind Buds represent everything that is beautiful about the music of The Grateful Dead and the scene that grew up around the band.”
ADAM EZRA GROUP is a dynamic roots/rock band that has risen to the top of the Boston music scene. Their unique blend of roots, pop and rock sounds, perfectly combines Ezra’s passion for smart well written lyrics and the band’s tight musicianship; bringing their sound together with rich, complex, and hook-laden melodies. The band’s energy live is now legendary as Adam and the group ignite the stage with a captivating charisma that has been compared to that of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. View From The Root is the band’s first national studio release. It is an eclectic bundle of songs that are brought to life with a range of styles and sounds that powerfully reflect Ezra’s message. Adam adds, “It’s a batch of writing from an era in my life that is colored by intensity, passion, humor, embarrassment, frustration, and elation. While we thrive on diversity of sound and style, we also wanted to make sure the album felt like a cohesive project; something people can listen to front to back and feel like the band is telling them one story”.
Meet THE MCLOVINS, the jam-rock band from Connecticut that Rolling Stone called “a trio of Connecticut kids who have managed to harness the musical ferocity of Trey Anastasio, Les Claypool and Stewart Copeland before being able to legally drive a car.” The McLovins (Jake Huffman, Drums & Vocals; Jason Ott, Bass & Back Up Vocals; and Jeff Howard, Guitar) didn’t even have a name when they first formed the band in 2008, but they did have an instant connection musically. They posted a video of themselves playing a cover of the epic Phish song YEM that quickly went viral and led to the jam scene enthusiastically embracing them.
THE PROBLEMADDICTS are a 5-man squad of emcees assembled by and including Executive Producer Tone, Vorheez (formerly of Lords of tha Fly), Force (also of The Alchemystics), Black Buddha (multiple freestyle tournament winner and former WSKB DJ), and 1ne Man sound (also of Lyke Minds). The Problemaddicts won “Best Hip Hop” 07, ‘08, ‘09 in The Valley Advocate’s reader’s poll, as well as the 1 Hip Hop Song (August, ‘07) and 1 Alternative Hip Hop Song (February, ’08) on OurStage.com. They recently were featured on AOL radio, after winning the 65th HoodHype.com episode’s viewer vote. The act was one of Urb.com’s “Next 1000”.
SILVER TOWER is the debut album from BRENDA. The Portland, Maine rock trio is a staple indie act in the thriving, yet nebulous northern New England music scene. In 200B, Joshua Loring and Peet Chamberlain formed Brenda after the dissolution of their previous band, Cult Maze. With the addition of drummer DJ Moore, Brenda spent the next two years cultivating their sound in the studio and on stage, performing with such prominent acts as Dr. Dog, The Cave Singers and Maps and Atlases. In late 2009, Brenda recruited former Cult Maze band mate (and current Metal Feathers front man) Jay Lobely to produce their debut LP, Silver Tower. The result is a soaring, tightly knit rock album with no shortage of captivating hooks and infectious melodies. With a sound firmly rooted in ’90s lo-fi and alt-pop, Brenda’s catchy and straightforward approach to songwriting and production evokes the work of Robert Pollard and Superchunk.
YOU CAN BE A WESLEY began in a Boston University dormitory basement four years ago and since has since evolved into four friends living together on the outskirts of Boston. They play buoyant, infectious pop-rock that tends to burrow deep in the stomach, sometimes the mind, but always the memory without ever an intention to leave. Their recent long player Heard Like Us has garnered acclaim from blogs worldwide and has ensnared local press in a nearly divine rapture.
The Mallett Brothers Band is a brand new alt country outfit grown out of the seedy underbelly of Northern New England’s ripe and eclectic music scene. With one foot in the muckiest of American country/bluegrass/folk/mountain music and another on the pulse of today’s postmodern musical sensibility, The Mallett Brothers Band has drawn its members from a true witches’ brew of musical histories (including dabbles in punk rock, Americana, folk, funk, metal, hip hop and bluegrass), to create a truly dynamic sound consisting of two parts dreadnought acoustic, three parts soaring vocal harmonies, a touch of twang and howl, and a rhythm section made of steel and fire. If they don’t get your boots tapping, they promise to play their next show at the dump.
Grand Hotel is a rock band from Portland, Maine whose tendency to mix solid grooves, four-part harmonies and pop hooks with a bit of an edge has already gained them a strong following. The band is anchored by the drumming of Aaron LaChance, who also serves as the band’s producer, tightened up by bassist Jason Elvin, the band’s manager, and filled out and colored in by lead guitarist Glen Capen and singer/guitarist Kyle Gervais. Their self-titled 2009 EP won them critical acclaim and will be followed up by a full-length in June.
Unsigned Boston-based band MAGIC MAGIC released their first self-titled album in the spring of 2009 where it received positive praise across the pond in the UK, and subsequently garnered attention in the US as a result. Their dynamic pop groove is juxtaposed against catchy, yet sporadically eerie melodies, while the band’s sound is ultimately anchored down by their dual drummer attack. Poised with two brand new albums of fresh tracks on the way in the summer of 2010, Magic Magic are looking forward to the year to come.
BILLY KEANE AND THE MISDEMEANOR OUTLAWS is a group based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Formed by Billy Keane and Noah Weiss in the summer of 2009, and quickly joined by Dave Brown and Jay Schultheis, they began making a name for themselves in the Berkshire County music scene and throughout the northeast. Performances at venues such as the Lion’s Den in Stockbridge, MA and Mission Bar & Tapas in Pittsfield are always well attended and well reviewed and they have amassed a respectable following that keeps their shows popular and enjoyable. With an extensive original musical repertoire inspired by genres from acoustic folk to reggae and with the occasional cover thrown in, they keep their audiences engaged, grooving and happy with diverse and interesting sets.
